In many different ways, I have been helping people in workplaces and families to resolve their differences for over ten years. Clients tell me that my strengths are my ability to get to the heart of a complicated problem, and my straightforward, transparent approach. I do not adopt the role of “the expert” but instead establish a collaborative relationship with my clients to share expertise and jointly explore the problem’s complexity. I believe – no, I know – that magic can happen without a magician.
At 25, I left a Ph.D. program in history to devote myself to what had been only a sideline of mediation. I already had nearly two hundred hours of mediation training. I then received my M.Sc. from the Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution, at George Mason University (near Washington, D.C.). I also received my Accredited Family Mediator (Acc.FM.) credentials after completing a hundred hour internship. I became a volunteer mediator with two community organizations, resolving neighbour disputes, complex organizational conflicts, and more recently marital separations.
In 2001, I co-authored a book titled From Conflict To Creativity, that offers guidance on how to manage dysfunctional workplace conflict, and on how to harness conflict as a positive source for innovation.
The next year, I left my consulting practice to work at the Ontario Human Rights Commission as a Mediation Officer. My role was twofold: to screen cases, and to mediate resolutions. Since returning to my consulting practice, I have been mediating, investigating, advising, and training people on human rights issues.
I regularly train new mediators in public programs on "Alternative Dispute Resolution” – mediation, coaching, and negotiation. I have been doing this for many years, as part of a family business that grew into a partnership with Conrad Grebel University College and Agree, Inc.
Several activities reflect my interest in complex, politicized disputes. I Chair the Public Conflict Section at the ADR Institute of Ontario. I will be teaching Community Conflict Resolution in the undergraduate program of Conrad Grebel (U of Waterloo). Finally, I have received a certificate in group facilitation from ICA.
I also help families, couples and individuals who have personal or interpersonal challenges. I completed an excellent one-year Brief and Narrative Therapy program at the Hincks-Dellcrest Institute. I have been volunteering as a counselor at the West-End Walk-In Clinic, and I offer private counselling.
Together, we can make a difference.
